The Ruhr region in Germany is a grown-together area – yet not all grow up under the same conditions. Opportunities, education and social participation are unequally distributed: often invisible, yet tangible in everyday life. “Unter demselben Himmel” focuses on how these social structures shape the upbringing of young women.
The work takes as its starting point the widely recognized narrative of a north–south divide in the Ruhr, one of Germany’s largest urban regions. This divide is not understood as a fixed geographic line, but as an expression of socio-spatial inequality that influences life paths and future prospects. This work centers on young women whose daily lives are observed and documented in collaboration. The female perspective opens a view beyond the familiar images of coal, steel, and male-dominated industrial labor that have historically defined the Ruhr. Female life experiences are made visible, expanding the region’s portrait to include previously overlooked realities.
