What remains is a singular, urgent instinct: to protect your home, your land, your people. The calendar now feels heavy. Each year is marked not just by seasons, but by memories — military assaults, war, displacement. Some days, especially September, feel like a psychological minefield. Memory doesn’t rest here. It pulls you back, forces you to relive what was never truly left behind. You learn to live with tension, but never in peace. The atmosphere stifles economic confidence, drives migration, and erodes any hope for normalcy. Peaceful life feels stolen from the South Caucasus, and peaceful coexistence seems like a distant dream. Yet, hope persists; it has not been outlawed. Into this fractured landscape steps German photographer Jana Islinger, with quiet attention. After multiple visits to Armenia — listening, traveling, engaging — her work attempts to make visible what much of the world has overlooked. Her project, ‘It’s my wound because it’s pain for me’, offers a photographic portrait of a society shaped by trauma, shadowed by war, and held together by a complex blend of fear and resilience. Her images capture a sense of loss, pain, the weight of geopolitics, and the lives of ordinary people navigating a complex and often harsh reality. Armenia becomes visible not only as a site of conflict but as a place where longing and grief coexist — where the desire for peace survives, even when peace feels far away. Islinger portrays these women and focuses on the conditions in which they grow up. Unter demselben Himmel shows how differently life is experienced in a city that is still influenced by this division. This boundary is barely visible in the cityscape, yet it shapes access, expectations and opportunities in everyday life. The work deliberately avoids clear-cut categorisations and addresses the unequal distribution of opportunities. It is precisely this that makes it clear that differences lie less in outward appearances than in the structures within which the young women grow up. By linking her observations with the memories of her mother, who herself grew up in Duisburg, Islinger raises the question of the persistence of such differences and how they shape the sense of home across generations. tension of a conflict between pro-Western reorientation and the historically Russian sphere of influence, which is reflected in the entire society. Droa [„It‘s time“] is a photographic search for the identity of a country between the dream about Europe, the fear of Russia and the consequences from years of oppression. A central role of the work is the Soviet Russian legacy and the transition from it to a - supposedly - independent system. I have accompanied people who are struggling in capitalism, lagging behind in change and finding comfort in their faith. But also those who are already born in an independent Georgia. They fight for a more self-determined life, far away from the conservative views of the older generation and demand a rapprochement with the EU. Also thematized are the breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which fell into a war of secession due to Russia's influence. I have portrayed those who have lost their homeland but not the hope to return one day. Another part of my work is formed by different parties and organizations. They try to fight against domestic events and powerful elites, which are infiltrated by Russia, and want to liberalize the country. In Passau, half of the historic city centre was under water, and villages such as Reichertshofen and Baar-Ebenhausen also suffered severe damage. Many of the people living there had to be evacuated and are now struggling with the consequences of the flood. Die Türen sind abgeschlossen, der Mensch ist eingeschlossen. Das Zimmer,&nbsp;das Haus, die Wohnung wird zum Schutzraum vor fremden Aerosolen, der Laptop im Nachtmodus zum Fenster. Schutz vor der Außenwelt boten dem Menschen früher Bunker, etwas früher Burgen, noch früher Höhlen. Laut Jürgen Grimm, Professor für Kommunikationswissenschaften an der Universität Wien, lernte der Mensch in eben diesen Krisensituationen die Fähigkeit zum inneren Dialog, zur Fantasie, zur Kunst, unterm Strich: er lernte, sich mit sich selbst und seinen Gedanken auseinanderzusetzen. Höhlenkompetenz nennt Grimm diese Leistung des Gehirns.Als Generation X,Y,Z (man hat hier mittlerweile den Überblick verloren) assoziiert man Höhlen eigentlich nur mit den aus Kinderaugen prächtig erscheinenden Eigenkreationen aus Kissen, Decken, Besenstielen, Tischecken, die in kurzer Zeit überall errichtet werden konnten und Platz für Spiel, Spaß und Rückzug boten. Das Beste, manchmal ärgerlichste, daran: Mit einem Fußstoß brachte man das Ding, seine Grenze zur Außenwelt, ganz einfach zum Einstürzen.Lassen sich die Grenzen nicht mehr einfach einreißen, wird aus einer Höhle schnell ein Käfig, ein Gefängnis, ein Raum an den man gebunden wird. In einer Entwicklungsphase, der viele nachsagen, sich vor allem ums Austesten eigener oder gesellschaftlicher Grenzen zu drehen, kann es da schnell eng werden. Eine globale Pandemie, das kann man wohl so sagen, gebärt wenige Gewinner. Die größten Verlierer, neben den Kindern, sind wohl Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene, Studentinnen und Studenten, Azubis und Oberschüler. Ihre Realität spielt sich in kargen WG Zimmern oder wiederbezogenen Kinderzimmern ab, tagelang starrt man in den Bildschirm, auf dem überforderte Professoren alleingelassen werden mit den Hürden des Unsinns, der sich Online-Unterricht nennt. Einen Hörsaal, eine Mensa oder die berühmten Studentenpartys kennt man nur vom Hörensagen oder aus alten und, im Falle der Partys, verschwommenen Erinnerungen aus den ersten Semestern. Übrig vom Erlebnis „Studium“ bleibt nur ein Rest, an den man sich später sowieso nicht vorrangig erinnern wollte. Die Motivation ging den meisten irgendwo zwischen dem zweiten und dritten Lockdown verloren, trotzdem: „Es muss immer weitergehen“. Das singt Peter Hein, früher Frontmann der Fehlfarben, heute Sänger von Family Five. Es könnte genauso gut der Pandemieplan des Kultusministeriums sein. Immer weiter, ihr habt ja Zeit, Zeit zu lernen, zu studieren, Zeit euch zu finden und nebenbei: wann wirst du jetzt eigentlich fertig? Immer weiter, über Sinn und Unsinn kann man sich später unterhalten. Immer weiter, wer auf der Strecke bleibt, war wohl zu faul, zu blöd, zu träge. Aber es gibt sie, die Hoffnungsschimmer, seltener wie vorher, aber Sie sind noch da. Von diesen Momenten erzählt uns diese Fotoserie. Auf Ihnen zeigen sich starke, unabhängige Menschen, porträtiert oft in ihren pandemischen Höhlenzimmern, ihre durchdringende Blicke bleiben spürbar, auch durch den Computerbildschirm. Manche traf es härter, andere fanden sich schneller zurecht. Glücklich kann sich schätzen, wer sein Höhlenmenschen-Dasein mit anderen Höhlenbewohnern teilen kann, und seien es nur die normalerweise eher nervigen Mitbewohner, mit denen man nun zwei Mal die Woche kocht. Glücklich kann sich schätzen, wer für ein paar Stunden Höhlenwände gegen die zumindest pseudogrüne Naturwelt einer Schrebergartenparzelle tauschen kann. Glücklich kann sich schätzen, wer sich an jemanden festhalten kann, um nicht der Realität zu entgleiten.
